Bryson was born in May of ‘23 with 4 major heart defects. Dextrocardia, Corrected Transposition, Double Outlet Right Ventricle (DORV), and Pulmonary Stenosis. He underwent surgery at 4 days old to place a stent in his heart so his lungs could receive the blood they needed. This was a temporary fix while his body could grow in size and strength. He had a procedure in December of ‘23 to widen the stent, because as he grew, he needed more blood traveling to his lungs. He was stronger than any of the doctors could have imagined, and a surgery scheduled for March of ‘24 continued to be pushed out. His stent was a brand new technology infused with anticoagulants and was helping him continue to thrive under his “temporary heart.” With every pound he gained, the chances of a successful surgery increased. On September 30, 2024 I was made aware that it was time for his full heart repair. Less than 24 hours later, we were in the hospital for pre-op, and the following day, October 2, he underwent a 10 hour open heart surgery. The surgeon moved his aorta from his right ventricle and attached it to his left ventricle. Dr. Emani replaced his pulmonary artery with a conduit and closed Bryson’s stented PDA. He also closed the large VSD or the hole that was connecting B’s left and right ventricles. His heart will always be backwards and on the right side of his chest, but his full repair was successful. After being on bypass for so long, his recovery was slow, but his body was stronger than ever. It was the first time he had ever had 100% oxygen saturation. Once he was healed and pain was subsiding, he wasted no time meeting his first year milestones which had seemed so out of reach to him for so long. Although CHD has no cure, the advancements Boston Children’s hospital is making to give pediatric cardiac patients a long and healthy life is astonishing. It's My Heart NE has been a huge support system to our Heart Warrior and our entire family. Bryson is nothing short of a miracle whose heart and personality were determined to beat the odds.
